Description

Globalization might signify homogenization and comprehensive formatting or normalization. However, it also implies a world that is becoming complex and multi-dimensional, one in which any place is in global or molecular concatenations with all others, as we see in stock market, (terror) contagion, climate change, and (social) mediatization. And therefore, more than time and space compression, what describes our present world is dimension compression that accounts for the globality of the local. Furthermore, this so to speak horizontalization has already pointed to the decline of the vertical normative paradigm. We are witnessing the emergence of differential, singular paradigms qua effective responses or creations with regard to all kinds of global forces that are making any place a zone of their impacts. This workshop purports to inquire into this tension and also connectedness between the global and the singular, more than the local or particular, that subtends our contemporary world. We focus on Asia as our site of concern and engagement to excavate as much as imagine its complexities and creative practices in various realms of the human and nonhuman, or the socio-political and ontological. We are experimenting with (critical) theory for that purpose, testing and creating the possibilities of theory in our current conjuncture; we are also experimenting on the production of theories that are situated in glocal Asias but are also singular in their virtue for effective change or transformation.
